The 2026 Danube Water Forum once again demonstrated the strength, diversity, and forward momentum of the IAWD and Danube Water Program community.  Building on IAWD’s established tradition, this year's Forum brought together utilities, policymakers, financial institutions, development partners, Young Water Professionals and technical experts to connect, exchange, and shape the future of water services in the region.

A Heartfelt Thank You

IAWD warmly thanks everyone who made this year’s Forum possible and impactful:

  • Our hosts in Sofia, for their outstanding hospitality and inspiring setting
  • Our sponsors and partners, for their continued trust and support
  • Our speakers and moderators, for their expertise, leadership, and thought-provoking contributions
  • Our engaged audience, whose active participation brought energy and depth to every discussion
  • The Young Water Professionals (YWP), whose strong presence and contributions enriched the dialogue and highlighted the importance of the next generation
  • And the dedicated organizing team, whose commitment and professionalism ensured a seamless and successful event

A Forum Energized by Youth and Collaboration

A defining feature of the 2026 Forum was the exceptional engagement of young professionals. The active participation of the YWP network sent a clear and encouraging message: the future of the water sector in the Danube region is in capable, motivated, and innovative hands.

Their perspectives brought fresh energy to discussions - challenging established approaches, introducing new ideas, and reinforcing the importance of intergenerational collaboration. This strong youth engagement was not only inspiring but essential to shaping a resilient and future-ready sector.

A Forum Defined by Engagement and Momentum

Across multiple sessions and exchanges, the Forum reflected a powerful collective narrative: the Danube region is moving from dialogue to action. The energy captured throughout the event - both in formal sessions and informal conversations - showcased a sector that is increasingly connected, solutions-oriented, and forward-looking. Participants highlighted the importance of working across borders and disciplines, recognizing that shared challenges require shared responses.

Several core themes resonated throughout the Forum:

  1. Partnership as a Driver of Progress: Collaboration remains at the heart of success. The Forum underscored how regional cooperation and peer exchange continue to unlock innovation and accelerate development.
  2. Empowering the Next Generation: The strong presence of YWP emphasized that investing in youth, skills, and leadership development is critical for long-term sector sustainability.
  3. Resilience and Climate Adaptation: Utilities are increasingly focusing on climate-resilient infrastructure and integrated approaches, combining technical solutions with forward-looking planning.
  4. Innovation and Digitalization: The growing role of digital tools and data-driven decision-making is transforming utility operations and improving service delivery.
  5. Financing and Capacity Development: Sustainable financing models and continuous capacity building remain essential enablers for achieving sector goals.

The Power of Community

A defining feature of the 2026 Forum was the strong sense of community. The many exchanges - captured in reflections shared throughout the event - demonstrated a willingness to learn, collaborate, and support each other across countries and institutions.

Participants reaffirmed that the IAWD and DWP family is more than a network - it is a platform for ongoing partnership and collective action.

Looking Ahead

The 2026 Danube Water Forum was not just a moment of reflection - it was a catalyst for what comes next. New connections were forged, ideas were sharpened, and momentum was built for continued collaboration across the region.

IAWD remains committed to supporting this journey by fostering dialogue, strengthening partnerships, and advancing initiatives that contribute to resilient, sustainable, and inclusive water services.

Thank you to everyone who was part of this year’s Forum - we look forward to continuing this work together.
