Three days, one big theme, and a region ready to turn ideas into action: the 2026 Danube Water Forum is taking shape and the draft agenda is now out and registrations are officially open. From 20 - 22 May 2026, water professionals from across the Danube region will gather in Sofia, Bulgaria, to go “From Vision to Action: Building a Water Resilient Danube Region”.
The Forum will explore what the EU Water Resilience Strategy means in practical terms for water and wastewater utilities, regulators, policymakers, and industry partners working on the front lines of service delivery.
This year’s program moves from big-picture vision to practical implementation. Participants can expect lively exchanges, technical insights, and real-world examples addressing some of the most pressing challenges in the sector.
A Spotlight on Bulgaria will open the discussion, examining the current state of the country’s water sector and placing national data in a broader regional context.
From there, the Forum dives into the operational backbone of resilient utilities. Sessions will explore how smart asset management helps utilities build infrastructure that lasts, how reducing water losses can strengthen water efficiency, and how data-driven approaches can transform everyday operations.
Wastewater and sludge management will also take center stage, with discussions on treatment solutions and approaches to sludge and treatment processes, reflecting the growing importance of sustainable and resource-conscious wastewater systems.
But resilience is not only about pipes, pumps, and treatment plants. The Forum will also look at the human dimension of resilience, with sessions on workforce development, leadership and governance, and the power of partnerships between utilities to accelerate learning and improve service delivery.
The 2026 DWF will be hosted at Toplocentrala – Regional Centre for Contemporary Art, a striking modern venue located in Sofia’s South Park. With its contemporary architecture, creative atmosphere, and spacious event facilities, Toplocentrala provides the perfect stage for forward-looking conversations about the future of water and wastewater services in the region.
Beyond the conference sessions, participants can look forward to an expanded exhibition space, networking opportunities, and the traditional social highlights from the Welcome Reception to the Forum dinner.
As in previous years, the Forum will feature a dedicated poster session, showcasing best practices, research, and innovative solutions relevant to water professionals across the Danube region.
Utilities, researchers, and practitioners are invited to submit outline papers by 31 March 2026. Selected contributions will be presented during the Poster Breakfast on 22 May, offering an excellent opportunity to share ideas and spark discussion. View the Call for Posters on the event's page!
With utilities, regulators, development partners, and technology providers expected to attend from across the region, the 2026 Danube Water Forum promises to be one of the most important sector gatherings of the year.
