In-situ groundwater level monitoring reveals worldwide status, trends and impacts

This study analyzes 20 years of local (in-situ) well data across 47 countries. It reveals that roughly one-third of groundwater levels are declining (indicating overexploitation), while 18% are rising. Both trends pose severe risks to food security, ecosystems, and infrastructure, highlighting the urgent need for expanded monitoring.
