The new European Water Academy: Asking a few Questions to Work out Important Answers

Voice of the Danube

Dear IAWD members and stakeholders! The European Commission has published an EU-wide survey concerning the European Water Academy (EUWA). Please support this important initiative by following the link below to answer a few questions.

The European Water Academy is a flagship initiative of the European Commission introduced under its Water Resilience Strategy, on 4 June 2025. Answering to increasing pressure on Europe's water resources, the academy aims to address capacity needs in Europe's water sector. Anchored in a public-private collaboration, and led by the EU Joint Research Centre, the Academy will bring together water sector stakeholders, academic institutions, and key industries such as agriculture, energy, and health. It will offer entrepreneurial training, capacity building and knowledge transfer, supporting researchers and innovators to identify commercialisation pathways for new technologies in areas such as water reuse, desalination, precision irrigation, wastewater surveillance and treatment, and critical infrastructure protection.

The academy will also support the implementation of policies like the recast Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive and enable practical responses to environmental and public health risks.

The IAWD Secretariat has been in continuous correspondence with the Joint Research Centre, taking an active role in the discussions around the EUWA initiative, with a focus on the skills component, contributing the best-practice experience we have already jointly established through the Danube Learning Partnership (D-LeaP).

Now we invite our members and our wider network to take a moment to respond to this survey - particularly if the concept of the EUWA resonates with their interests. We encourage everybody to indicate their support through IAWD, as well as any indirect contributions they may wish to make, in addition to direct engagement.

IAWD is convinced that the EUWA represents a promising approach to addressing the multiple challenges facing the water sector and to fostering lifelong learning among water professionals.

Thank you in advance for supporting this effort! Should you have any questions or require further information regarding the EUWA, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Please follow the link provided below to complete the survey before 31 October.
